New Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has revealed that before accepting the job, he consulted former Leicester boss and current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. Van Nistelrooy reached out to Maresca, who guided Leicester back to the Premier League as Championship winners, to gain insights into the club and its culture. Maresca’s positive feedback about his time at the club played a significant role in Van Nistelrooy’s decision to take on the challenge.
Van Nistelrooy replaces Steve Cooper, whose defensive tactics and ties to Nottingham Forest failed to win over Leicester fans. Maresca, on the other hand, is still fondly remembered for his attacking style, which has now translated into early success at Chelsea, where the team currently sits fourth in the Premier League. In contrast, Leicester is struggling in 16th place, just a point above the relegation zone.
Van Nistelrooy has expressed his admiration for Maresca’s “idea of play” and hopes to replicate some of that magic to lift Leicester out of their current predicament. His first task as manager will be to lead the Foxes against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.
