MORGANTOWN, WV – In a move that is electrifying the Mountaineer faithful, West Virginia University (WVU) football icon Jeff Hostetler is set to make a celebrated return to Morgantown. The university has officially announced that Hostetler, the legendary quarterback who etched his name into Mountaineer lore, will rejoin the program in 2025 as the new offensive coach.

Hostetler, a revered figure in WVU football history, brings a storied career, a deep understanding of Mountaineer tradition, and a passion for offensive excellence to his new role. His appointment is being hailed as a watershed moment, promising an exciting new chapter for the Mountaineers’ offense.

As offensive coach, Hostetler will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing offensive strategies: Hostetler’s expertise in quarterback play, passing schemes, and overall offensive philosophy will be crucial in designing and executing dynamic and effective game plans.
  • Coaching and mentoring offensive players: Drawing upon his own experiences as a record-breaking quarterback, Hostetler will provide invaluable guidance and mentorship to WVU’s quarterbacks, receivers, and other offensive players, helping them to refine their skills, master the intricacies of the offense, and maximize their potential.
  • Enhancing offensive creativity and innovation: Hostetler’s offensive mind and deep understanding of the modern game will be vital in fostering a culture of creativity and innovation within the Mountaineers’ offense, ensuring that it remains at the forefront of college football.

  • Collaborating with the coaching staff: Hostetler will work closely with Head Coach Rich Rodriquez and the entire coaching staff to ensure seamless communication, coordination, and execution of the team’s offensive objectives.

Hostetler’s legacy at WVU is legendary. After transferring from Penn State, he led the Mountaineers to an 18-6 record in two seasons (1982-1983) under head coach Don Nehlen. His Mountaineer career was highlighted by a stunning 41-27 upset victory over the Oklahoma Sooners in his first game, a performance that earned him Sports Illustrated Offensive Player of the Week honors. Hostetler’s leadership and playmaking abilities helped elevate WVU football to national prominence during his time in Morgantown.

 

Following his stellar college career, Hostetler went on to a successful professional career in the National Football League (NFL), most notably with the New York Giants, where he won two Super Bowl rings. His experience at the highest levels of the game will undoubtedly be a tremendous asset to the Mountaineers’ offense.
