Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries has announced that former Hoosier standout and 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Cody Zeller, will return to his alma mater as an assistant coach.

Cody Zeller Returns to Indiana Basketball as Assistant Coach

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries has announced that former Hoosier standout and 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Cody Zeller, will return to his alma mater as an assistant coach. The move brings Zeller back to Bloomington, where he was once a pivotal player for the Hoosiers, before embarking on a successful NBA career.

“It’s really special to welcome Cody Zeller back to Bloomington as a member of our coaching staff,” DeVries said. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our locker room and on the court. His experience at the highest levels of the game, combined with his passion for Indiana Basketball, make him a tremendous addition to our program. I am excited for our players to have the opportunity to learn from him.”

Zeller’s return to Indiana marks a new chapter in his basketball journey. After a stellar high school career at Washington High School, where he earned the coveted Indiana Mr. Basketball title in 2011, Zeller committed to play for the Hoosiers. His arrival was highly anticipated, and he quickly became a key figure in the resurgence of Indiana Basketball under then-head coach Tom Crean.

During his two seasons (2011-2013) in Bloomington, Zeller averaged 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, showcasing his versatility and skill as a forward/center. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2012 and earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors in 2013. His contributions helped the Hoosiers achieve significant success, including a Big Ten championship and a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Zeller’s time at Indiana is remembered for his exceptional play, his high motor, and his connection with the passionate Hoosier fanbase. Following his impressive college career, Zeller was selected fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats (now the Charlotte Hornets). Zeller’s NBA career spanned 11 seasons, during which he also played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and New Orleans Pelicans. He appeared in 552 career games, averaging 7.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
