Glenn Robinson, “The Big Dog,” Donates $7.5 Million to Purdue Basketball Youth Development Program

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – Purdue University and its Athletic Department announced today a transformative gift of $7.5 million from former Boilermaker basketball star Glenn Robinson. The donation, given by Robinson and his wife, will establish and significantly expand the Glenn Robinson Basketball Youth Development Program, aimed at providing enhanced opportunities for young athletes across the region.

Robinson, a Purdue legend and NBA All-Star, was known during his time at Purdue as “The Big Dog,” a nod to his powerful playing style and dominant presence on the court. His legacy at Purdue includes leading the Boilermakers to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1994 and earning the John R. Wooden Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate player. Robinson’s connection to Purdue, and his desire to give back, has culminated in this substantial contribution.

 

“Purdue University and the game of basketball have played an integral role in my life,” Robinson said in a statement released by the University. “It’s important for me to give back and help provide opportunities for young people to develop their skills, both on and off the court. I believe that sports can teach valuable life lessons, and I’m excited to support a program that will make a positive impact.”

The Glenn Robinson Basketball Youth Development Program will focus on several key areas:

• Expanding Access: The program will work to reach a broader range of young athletes, including those from underserved communities, by reducing financial barriers to participation. This will involve scholarships, reduced program fees, and providing equipment and transportation assistance.
• Skill Development: The program will offer high-quality coaching and training to help young players develop their basketball skills. This will include camps, clinics, and specialized training sessions focused on fundamental techniques, advanced strategies, and overall athletic development.

• Life Skills: Beyond basketball, the program will incorporate elements that teach important life skills. These include teamwork, leadership, communication, sportsmanship, and the importance of academic success. Mentorship programs and workshops will be included.
• Facility Enhancement: A portion of the funds will be used to improve existing basketball facilities used by the program, ensuring that participants have access to safe, modern, and well-maintained spaces for training and competition. This may include upgrades to playing surfaces, equipment, and locker rooms.
• Coaching Development: The program will invest in the training and development of coaches, providing them with the resources and education necessary to effectively teach the game and mentor young athletes. This will ensure a high standard of instruction and a positive learning environment.

Purdue Athletic Director Mike Bobinski expressed his gratitude for Robinson’s generosity. “This is a truly transformational gift for Purdue Basketball and for the young people in our community,” Bobinski said. “Glenn Robinson is one of the most iconic figures in Purdue Athletics history, and this investment in our youth will have a lasting impact for generations to come. The program is expected to launch in the coming months, with details on specific initiatives and opportunities to be announced soon. A formal dedication ceremony is being planned for later in the year, where Robinson will be honored for his contribution.

Robinson’s career at Purdue was stellar. In his two seasons (1992-1994), he scored 1,707 points. As a junior, he averaged 30.3 points per game, leading the nation in scoring and earning him the Naismith Award and the Wooden Award. He was the consensus National Player of the Year in 1994. Following his time at Purdue, Robinson was the first overall pick in the 1994 NBA Draft, selected by the Milwaukee Bucks. He went on to have a successful 11-year NBA career, including two All-Star Game appearances and an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2005.
