PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — After losing nearly their entire roster from their Elite 8 squad last season, the Oregon State women’s basketball team was expected to be in rebuild mode while transitioning to the West Coast Conference.
Despite finishing the regular season a game over .500, the Beavers’ remarkable run in the WCC Tournament will have them in the Big Dance once again.
Catarina Ferreira led the Beavers with 16 points while Sela Heide added 12 points off the bench as OSU clinched a March Madness birth with a 59-46 win over the Portland Pilots in the WCC Tournament title game on Tuesday.
It’s the ninth time since 2014 that the Beavers have reached the NCAA Tournament.
OSU defeated San Francisco 61-59 in the quarterfinal game on Sunday before beating Gonzaga 63-61 the following day to reach the championship game. The Beavers also lost to the Pilots by 25 at home earlier this season.
After trailing in first half, the Beavers went on a 20-2 run in the second quarter to take a commanding lead. After that run, they never looked back.
Despite finishing the season with a 29-4 record and winning the WCC regular season title, the Pilots are projected to be outside the field of 64.
