Mark Sears Hits a Rough Patch, and Alabama’s Totally Cool With It… For Now – Is Patience the Tide’s Secret Weapon or a Ticking Time Bomb? Can They Ride This Wave or Will It Sink?

In a lackluster first half, Alabama found themselves tied at 40-40 with LSU, despite a lack of offensive cohesion and sloppy play. Sears, who typically leads the Tide in scoring, didn’t contribute a single point in the opening half, going 0-3 from the field and struggling to find any rhythm. As the second half began, head coach Nate Oats made a bold move—benching Sears for the entire second half.

Despite Sears sitting out, Alabama’s defense in the second half was much improved, and they pulled away for the win. Oats was tight-lipped about his decision, simply stating that the team went with the players who gave them the best chance to win. However, the absence of Sears, who had led the team to a Final Four appearance the previous season, sparked plenty of speculation about his role moving forward.

This wasn’t the first time Sears had a scoreless game. Earlier in the season, against Illinois, he also posted a zero, though he voluntarily stayed out of the game when the team was performing well. Saturday’s game felt different. Sears appeared visibly frustrated as he sat on the bench, and Oats made no effort to explain the decision post-game.

For now, Alabama is handling Sears’ struggles with a level of patience, understanding that the team’s depth—especially offensively—has lessened the need for him to carry the scoring load. Alabama has a roster filled with talented players like Chris Youngblood, Labaron Philon, and freshman Aden Holloway, which has made it easier for Oats to sideline Sears without putting the team’s success in jeopardy.

However, the road ahead won’t always be so forgiving. Alabama will need Sears to find his groove if they’re to contend for championships. For now, Oats has kept faith that Sears will rise to the challenge, but how long can Alabama keep riding this wave of patience? The next few games will likely determine whether this bold decision pays off or if it becomes a ticking time bomb. Either way, Alabama fans will be watching closely.

 

The Crimson Tide’s next challenge comes on Wednesday when they travel to Starkville to face Mississippi State, and they’ll need Sears to contribute if they want to extend their winning streak.
