Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has dismissed suggestions that Kylian Mbappé’s form is to blame for the team’s recent struggles, emphasizing that the issues are collective rather than individual. Ancelotti’s defense comes as the star forward faces mounting criticism after scoring only two goals in his last nine matches for Madrid.
Madrid’s poor run has included defeats to Lille, Barcelona, AC Milan, and Liverpool, with Mbappé missing a crucial penalty in the Champions League loss to Liverpool at Anfield.
Ancelotti: “It’s a Collective Problem”
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Madrid’s LaLiga clash with Getafe, Ancelotti downplayed the focus on Mbappé, who joined the club this season:
“Mbappé’s problem is the same as for all of us. The idea is to try to find the best version of ourselves: from him, from myself, from the other players. We don’t consider it an individual problem for a player who, among other things, is new here, is adapting, has scored eight goals, and has participated in our attacking game with assists. We can all do better.”
Despite the slump, Real Madrid remains within touching distance of LaLiga leaders Barcelona, trailing by four points with a game in hand.
Injury Crisis and Player Morale
Madrid’s struggles have been compounded by an ongoing injury crisis. Dani Carvajal and Éder Militão are out for the season, while Vinícius Júnior is sidelined for at least three weeks. On a positive note, forward Rodrygo is set to return for the Getafe game.
Ancelotti also addressed the mental state of Mbappé, who has faced significant criticism:
“[Mbappé] isn’t depressed; he’s aware that he has to do better. Many of my players have missed penalties. We have to continue to support and help. It’s a collective problem and not an individual one.”
Ancelotti Takes Responsibility
The Italian coach admitted that he, too, is struggling to deliver his best:
“I’m like Mbappé. I am giving everything to get the best version of myself. The results say that I haven’t been able to find the best version of myself. I’m not happy, but I am convinced that we are going to fix it.”
January Transfers: Not a Priority Yet
While sources suggest Madrid is eyeing reinforcements, particularly in defense, Ancelotti dismissed transfer talk for now:
“I think it’s a waste of time to think about signing players now. We’ll have 40 days to think about it. Things can change. [David] Alaba is doing very well and will be back soon.”
Real Madrid will aim to bounce back against Getafe as they look to regain form and maintain their pursuit of domestic and European success. Meanwhile, Ancelotti’s firm backing of Mbappé highlights the club’s commitment to fostering team cohesion amidst the challenges.
