Esme Morgan, now playing for the NWSL’s Washington Spirit, has embraced the challenges and differences of competing in the United States compared to England’s Women’s Super League (WSL).
“The NWSL is faster-paced and more transitional, with teams playing more direct football,” Morgan explained. After joining the league less than six months ago, the 24-year-old defender helped her team reach the NWSL Championship final, marking their first appearance since 2021.
Morgan, formerly of Manchester City, described the NWSL as highly competitive. “Every game is tough, no matter the opponent’s position in the table. Here, no one plays just to defend or settle for a draw, unlike in the WSL where lower teams often use a low block against stronger sides,” she said.
Playoff Format Adds Drama
Adjusting to the NWSL’s playoff structure was a new experience for Morgan. “In England, the best team over the season is the winner. Here, the playoffs add drama, giving teams another shot at success,” she said. Despite playing a key role in the Spirit’s postseason run, the team fell 1-0 to Orlando Pride in the final.
Morgan also praised the electrifying atmosphere at Audi Field, Washington Spirit’s home stadium, during sold-out playoff games. “The noise during those matches was the loudest I’ve ever experienced—it was incredible,” she shared.
England Connections and National Team Ambitions
As Morgan prepares to join the Lionesses for their international fixtures, she’s eager to showcase her growth to head coach Sarina Wiegman. Although playing abroad, she remains confident in her chances for national team selection, saying, “If I’m performing well here, I know the coaches are keeping an eye on me.”
Several of Morgan’s England teammates have asked about her NWSL experience, and she encourages others to explore the league for its unique challenges. “The NWSL and WSL are the two most competitive leagues. Playing here exposes you to new learning opportunities, which is why I made the move,” she said.
Off the Pitch
Morgan has also embraced American culture, including a love for the NFL. A dedicated Jacksonville Jaguars fan, she enjoys tuning into NFL RedZone despite her team’s struggles. “It’s tough being a fan sometimes,” she joked, balancing her team’s playoff success with the Jaguars’ losses.
