Former Aston Villa manager Carla Ward has spoken out in support of England head coach Sarina Wiegman amid criticism following the Lionesses’ recent dip in form.
Since their historic Euro 2022 triumph, England has faced scrutiny, particularly after failing to qualify for the Olympics and narrowly earning a spot in next year’s European tournament. A shaky international break in October, which included a 4-3 loss to Germany at Wembley and a narrow 2-1 win over South Africa, only added to the pressure on Wiegman.
Despite the criticism, Ward believes the team remains “in a really good position” and says the media is unfairly amplifying the challenges Wiegman faces.
“When you’ve achieved as much as Sarina, it’s hard to keep matching that level without constant development and new talent,” Ward told 90min. “Before she came in, we were lost. Now, she’s transformed the game in England and put women’s football on the global stage. We should focus on her impact rather than what’s a normal dip in football.”
England vs. USWNT: A High-Stakes ‘Friendly’
England is gearing up for two friendlies, starting with a clash against Olympic champions USA at Wembley Stadium, followed by a game against Switzerland at Bramall Lane. However, Ward insists these matches are far from friendly.
“No match between two top nations is ever a friendly,” she said. “It’ll be highly competitive and come down to who manages the occasion better.”
Both teams will be missing key players. England is without stars like Lauren Hemp, Maya Le Tissier, Ella Toone, and Lauren James due to injuries. The USWNT is also missing its “Triple Espresso” trio: Mallory Swanson, Trinity Rodman, and Sophia Smith.
Ward, who worked as a scout for the USWNT during the Olympics, anticipates a fascinating matchup. “England may be missing players, but so is the USA. Both sides aren’t at their strongest. While the USA might have a slight mental edge, this is going to be close. The absence of Lauren Hemp will be a significant loss for England.”
She predicts the game will showcase plenty of quality, adding, “This is likely the biggest test for both teams in a long time.”
